834. an incredible antique Kazak Caucasian rug
834. Provenance: Kazak, northern Armenia/southern Georgia, The Caucasus
Age: Circa 1890
Size: 220 x 120 cm
Condition: Pretty good for high age, with some wear to the field.
Notes: A beautiful tribal piece from the highland areas of northern Armenia. The nomadic herding way of life that led to such pieces, has long since disappeared. The pinnacle of niaive tribal design and imaginative drawing was from the 1860s to the turn of the century, and this piece is from that era. A relatively simple design of interwoven leaf motifs, surrounded by a strong border of prominent stylized flower heads. The colours are what particularly stand out, and for me the yellow and (rare) natural green top it all. Collectible.
