133. A magnificent 'Lachak-Turunj' Baku rug

Old Baku Caucasion Tabriz design rug

133. Provenance: Probably Baku, The Caucasus

Size: 209x136cm

Age: Circa 1950

Condition: Excellent.

Notes: Lovely harmonious, warm colours (albeit not natural) with an elaborate design reminiscent of the early ‘dragon’ and ‘star-burst’ Kazak rugs of the Caucasus. The design style is known as 'Lachak-Turunj' and dates to ancient Islamic art and even to weaving as far back as the 13th Century. The design may have been first woven in Tabriz in southern Azerbaijan (now Iranian Azerbaijan), but this rug was probably created in Baku to the north.
