498. a noble antique Karabagh Caucasian rug
498. Provenance: Karabagh, Azerbaijan, The Caucasus
Size: 237 x 150 cm
Age: Circa 1920
Condition: Good. Minor loss at one end, fully secured. Minor wear and foldwear.
Notes: Fine natural dyes and a pure tribal design, with four medallions enclosed by stepped-diamond designs, in a field full of star and flowerhead motifs. Many Karabagh rugs show a close resemblance in style to Kurdish rugs across the border in Northwest Persia and some even use a cotton foundation like their Persian cousins. This one however is wool-on-wool. The colours in this piece are superb - particularly the very pale indigo blue and the saffron/indigo green. Collectable.
