374. A captivating Antique Kurdish Runner

Antique Caucasian or Kurdish Runner

374. Provenance: Kurdish tribes, Persian Azerbaijan, NW Persia

Age: Circa 1920

Size: 258 x 111 cm

Condition: Good with overall even low pile. Very minor losses at one end - fully secured.

Notes: A wonderfully bold, tribal design with what appears to be a niaive rendition of the time-honoured 'Herati' all-over repeat. Lovely tribal touches such as the small livestock animals in the centre of the field. The cotton foundation suggests that this carpet's origins lie in Persian Azerbaijan, though it shares many of its design elements with its cousins across the border in the Caucasus. It was probably woven by the Kurdish minority.
