632. an exquisite antique Heriz Persian carpet

Antique Heriz Persian Carpet

632. Provenance: Heriz, Northwest Persia/Persian Azerbaijan

Size: 350 x 250 cm

Age: Circa 1890

Condition: Commensurate with age. Heavy wear to the field, side cords a little tatty (can be repaired), losses at one end in particular.

Notes: Despite the condition which is best described as 'well-used', this is a gorgeous antique piece, exuding faded grace. The colours are all natural and, as is typical of Heriz of this era, are all excellent and vivacious. The drawing has the crude/naive, almost childlike simplicity for which these rugs are prized, and the absence of a dominant central medallion in this case is a blessing. Instead there is a wondeful trellis-like spread of flowers and foliage, reminiscent of the 'trees-of-life' which feature both in city and tribal weavings. An ageing village masterpiece.
