342. A pleasing old Kurdish or Caucasian Runner

342. Provenance: Kurdish tribes, NW Persia, or possibly Caucasian, Karabagh (?)

Size: 286 x 109 cm

Age: Circa 1920

Condtion: Good.

Notes: Ascribing exact origins for rugs from this Azerbaijan area is never an easy business. Although this lovely runner has the geometric version of the 'running leaf' main border typical of Caucasian Kazaks, it's cotton foundation suggest a more likely Northwest Persian, Kurdish birthplace. Cultural and artistic flow is no respecter of such politacl boundaries, and either way this is a wonderful runner, with clear, crisp design and largely natural dyestuffs.
