659. a statesmanlike antique Kizilayak Turkoman carpet

Antique Kizilayak Afghan main carpet

659. Provenance: Kiziliyak tribe, Turkoman group of tribes, Turkmenistan

Size:  314 x 220 cm

Age: Circa 1890

Condition: Mostly very good for age. However, there are two very large holes (pls see picture), which have been repatched using old fragments. Some areas of minor wear. Loss of kilim at one end (very normal in carpets of this age), all fully and professionally secured.

Notes:  Rich and warm madder colouring in this Kiziliyak beauty. Kizilayaks are very similar in look and design to many Arabachi and Chodor rugs. This has four rows of tauk-nuska main guls and chemche minor guls (see Uwe Jordan, Turkoman Rugs, p266). The 'curled leaf' design in the main border is also beautiful. A tight and even weave. Notwithstanding its old repairs, a stunning antique carpet.
