621. a scintillating northwest Persian runner

Antique northwest Persian runner

621. Provenance: Northwest Persia/Azerbaijan

Size: 367 x 88 cm

Age: Circa 1900

Condition: Areas of minor wear. Good for age.

Notes:  This is a truly resplendent piece of weaving, with a gorgeous array of natural colours, most notably the vivid, almost electric light blue in the central medallion. The design features many similarities with its cousins just accross the border into the Caucasus proper, though the cotton foundation suggests that this is from Persian Azerbaijan. The medallions feature humanoid figues (somewhat 'alien'-looking), while the large hooked-star like motifs in the main field are commonly seen in Caucasian rugs.
